The second and final phase of The Ohio State University’s Biomedical and Materials Engineering Complex (BMEC), called “The Gateway to Engineering,” is made possible by a $15 million donation from the Austin E. Knowlton Foundation, an enormous investment in engineering education and research. The second phase of BMEC aims for move-in to begin in the summer of 2025 and features state-of-the-art teaching and research spaces. Combined with BMEC’s first phase, Mars G. Fontana Laboratories, completed in the summer of 2020, the complex will total 260,000 square feet.

Home to Biomedical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering, Fontana Labs showcases teaching and research in biomaterials. Now, phase two will add STEM education-focused teaching labs, a College of Engineering leadership suite, the Department of Electrical Engineering’s materials research group, and the Department of Engineering Education's first-year engineering classes. The facility will include a two-floor "makerspace" in addition to space just for K-12 STEM outreach programming.
